Match the monitor to the care area

Every patient monitor measures much the same core parameters: ECG, SpO₂, non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP), temperature and respiration. What changes is the screen size, the optional parameters and the connectivity, and those depend on where the monitor will be used.

ICU: large screens, many waveforms and advanced parameters. Options include the GE B105P (10-inch), GE B125P (12-inch), GE Carevance H1 + D15 and Enmind Gemini.

Operating room and anaesthesia: add-on modules for depth of anaesthesia, neuromuscular transmission and gases. Options include the GE B105M, B125M and B155M, the Edan iM50 and the Enmind Taurus.

General ward: portability, routine vital-sign rounds and early warning scores. Options include the GE Portrait VSM, GE Carevance H1 + D7 and Enmind Venus.

Ambulance and transport: the Enmind Virgo is lightweight, rugged, battery-operated and meets EN 1789.

Preconfigured or modular?

Preconfigured monitors such as the GE B105P and B125P come with a fixed parameter set: DINAMAP SuperSTAT NIBP, the EK-Pro v14 arrhythmia algorithm, sidestream CO₂ and cardiac output. They suit units whose needs are clear and stable. The B125P adds gesture-based alarm silencing, which reduces touching the screen for infection control.

Modular monitors such as the GE B105M, B125M and B155M take three e-modules plus a two-slot frame, so parameters can be added for the case: Entropy (depth of anaesthesia), NMT (neuromuscular transmission), SPI and gas modules. They connect directly to Carestation 600 anaesthesia machines and show ventilation and gas data on the same screen.

Hub and dock systems such as the GE Carevance separate the measurement hub (H1) that stays with the patient from the display dock (D15 or D7), so patients can move between beds without losing data. The plastics are 100% recyclable, standby power is close to zero, and the hardware is designed for a 10-year lifetime.

Parameters and algorithms worth asking about

  • NIBP: GE's DINAMAP SuperSTAT and Edan's iCUFS algorithms are designed for fast, comfortable blood pressure readings.
  • SpO₂: several GE models let you choose between TruSignal, Masimo and Nellcor technology, which matters if your hospital has already standardised on one sensor brand.
  • ECG: GE's EK-Pro v14 handles arrhythmia analysis, and the Edan iM50 supports 12-lead ECG with SEMIP interpretation.
  • Early warning scores: NEWS2 and MEWS help general wards spot deteriorating patients sooner. They are available on the GE B1x5P series and the Portrait VSM, which supports up to 7 protocols.
  • Optional parameters: CO₂, invasive blood pressure (IBP) and cardiac output for critically ill patients.

Choose only the parameters your team will actually use. Modules that sit unused add cost without adding care.

Connectivity and central monitoring

Most monitors today can send data to a central station or an electronic medical record. Bring your IT team in early:

  • The Edan iM50 connects over LAN or WiFi to the MFM-CMS central system using HL7/XML.
  • The GE B1x5P and B1x5M series use TLS-encrypted HL7 and FIPS-validated WiFi.
  • The GE Portrait VSM sends readings to the EMR over HL7 and IHE.

Our biomedical engineering team installs, configures and trains users on site, and handles calibration and annual safety inspection across all 77 provinces. Most critical-care patients also need infusion pumps and ventilators, and for diagnostic 12-lead recordings see our ECG machines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a patient monitor measure?
A patient monitor measures 5 basic parameters: ECG, SpO₂, NIBP, temperature, and respiration rate. Advanced models also measure CO₂, IBP, cardiac output, and anesthesia parameters.
How does an ICU monitor differ from a ward monitor?
ICU monitors typically have larger 10-15" displays, more waveforms, additional parameters (IBP, CO₂, cardiac output), and Central Station connectivity. Ward monitors prioritize portability, basic parameters, and battery backup.
How much do GE HealthCare patient monitors cost?
GE HealthCare patient monitor pricing depends on model, screen size, and optional modules. Ranging from Portrait VSM for general vital signs to B155M Modular for OR. Contact Thunder Venture Group, an authorized distributor, for a quotation.
