What point-of-care ultrasound is used for
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is ultrasound performed by the treating clinician at the bedside to answer a specific clinical question straight away, instead of sending the patient to radiology. Common uses include:
- FAST scans in the emergency room to look for free fluid in the abdomen or around the heart after trauma
- Guiding procedures such as vascular access and regional nerve blocks
- Quick obstetric checks in clinics
- Basic lung and cardiac assessment on the ward or in the ICU
- Home visits, ambulances and mobile medical units, where a cart-based system is not practical
POCUS does not replace a full diagnostic scan by a radiologist, but it lets teams make faster decisions where the patient is.
Choosing a probe and channel count for the Edan NANO
The Edan NANO is available with 32 or 64 physical channels and several probe options. The right combination depends on what you scan most.
C5 probe (convex, 2 to 5 MHz): lower frequency penetrates deeper, which suits abdominal, obstetric, lung and FAST examinations.
L12 probe (linear, 4 to 12 MHz): higher frequency resolves structures close to the skin, which suits vascular access, regional nerve blocks, musculoskeletal and superficial soft-tissue work.
32 or 64 channels: more channels generally means finer image detail. Teams that scan a wide range of indications, or want the most detailed image, usually choose 64 channels. A team with one focused use, such as procedure guidance, may find 32 channels sufficient. The best test is a side-by-side demonstration on the work you actually do.
Practical features for daily use
- Wireless, works with a phone or tablet. The probe connects wirelessly to an app on Android and iOS, so there are no cables to manage at the bedside.
- IPX7 waterproof. Rated for temporary immersion, which makes cleaning between patients easier. Always use the disinfectants the manufacturer approves.
- Around 5 hours of battery in typical use, with both wireless and wired charging.
- Pocket size. Fits a coat pocket or an emergency bag.
Before you buy, check: whether your current phones or tablets support the app, whether the way images are stored and exported fits your hospital's patient-data policy, and who on the team will be the main users who need training.
